I know Roon has DSP fun built in, but after experimenting, I’m sticking with no EQ/DSP processing. Have some nice image depth streaming Mile’s Davis “Filles de Kilimanjaro” At this moment at least, Roon and the new DAC have decided to play nice with each other and deliver me some musical enjoyment. In that case, I move over to Audirvana, which always connects to the DAC, no problem. Some times Roon does not see it (!) when connected direct to the macbook core, and just wants to use the computer’s system output (not as good a sound as direct connection to DAC). One issue is that I have a new DAC (Denafrips Ares II). I will say that with the latests updates, Audirvana sounds great, but I felt that 1.8 Roon was also a possible step forward when I first heard it (streaming via Iphone, with my macbook as the core). I’m going to do some comparisons the next few days, both with my electrostatic speakers and good quality headphones. If you run HQP, you’d need to decouple the HQP server that does the heavy lifting away from your DAC and use a NAA to stream the data over to your DAC. It really is an excellent, well thought out offering. Roon has another advantage, it can integrate with HQPlayer’s resampling which I find better than Audirvana 3’s upsampling algorithm. I’ve been using Audirvana for a few years now, and Roon for at least 1.5 to 2 years (at one point, I thought Roon was supposed to have better sound. In my opinion, Roon is like a much better, more polished & slick version of Audirvana. Cheers - Scott.I’d like to know how others feel as well. The Audirvana Studio signature is the same and tracks between all my devices PS Strata via WiFi -UPnP, and my Bluetooth speakers (Klipsch the 3) and even Sony. And if you are considering Audirvana - my prayers are with you if you try to use it - as my experience this year with the new one was less than stellar. If anyone is considering Roon, I would certainly recommend giving it a try. I was so impressed, I just bought a Mac mini to set up a music server in the house. If you consider yourself an audiophile, you are probably familiar with the music apps Audirvana and Roon. Teamed with Qobuz, it really is a seamless experience between my ripped CDs, downloaded files and streaming files. I also like the recommendations - which are much better than any other algorithm that I've used in the music world. And the Roon interface is so, so, so much better than Audirvana. Audirvana studio has some interesting dac information and detailed data on the recorded music, but unstable and lacks several other features from roon. Switching input tubes in the CSP-3 brought in more top end while keeping the whole thing musical. I have the old permanent audirvana version (3.5), I was not using it, and I decided to try both the audirvana studio and roon. Roon is not as detailed on the top end, but it is more dynamic and fun to listen to. The newer Studio/Origin seems less artificial but it seems more sterile to me. It seems to have a slight artificiality to the high end, but not so much that it bothered me. Long story short, I'm now on the Roon train.Īudirvana 3.5 is very detailed, especially in the high end. I enjoyed your review, but I wish you had provided more detail on how you set up Roon and compared an optimal Audirvana configuration to an optimal Roon installation. Roon is a network audio system that can function as computer audio, albeit poorly. After trying the Origin version (after trying out Studio when it first came out) that was released this year, I decided I should try out Roon instead and see what I thought. There’s no simple way to compare the sound of the two. I had been sticking with the 3.5 release of Audirvana as I didn't like the new interface or different sound signature of the newer Studio. The decision for me ultimately came down to how I enjoyed music more on either platform. I am not going to pretend I can choose between and tell you Roon sounds better or Audirvana. So, I made the switch to Roon after using Audirvana for years. Both Roon & Audirvana had a 30 day free trial, so I grabbed both and set off comparing usability, sound quality & price to performance.
